The 2025 NHS Staff Survey results have been published today, with 56% of colleagues at CityCare taking part and sharing their experiences of working within the organisation. Thank you to everyone who responded — your feedback provides a clear and honest picture of how colleagues are feeling and where change is needed.

Our results indicate that whilst colleagues continue to demonstrate strong commitment, compassion and professionalism, many also describe significant pressures affecting their day‑to‑day experience. Our overall engagement score has fallen to 6.8 out of 10, with 60% recommending CityCare as a place to work and  30% feeling that there are enough staff to enable them to do their job properly.  However, we are not a significant outlier, across the NHS this year, the results reflect a challenging national landscape.

Across Citycare, a strong sense of purpose remains evident, with 87% of our colleagues saying their role makes a meaningful difference to patients and service users, and 76% of colleagues saying that if a friend or relative needed treatment they would be happy with the standard of care provided.

Colleagues are increasingly positive about flexible working, and we have seen improvements in this year’s results compared to the previous year, with 59% of our colleagues feeling the organisation supports a healthy balance between work and home life, and 65% say they personally achieve a good balance. Openness with managers also remains a clear strength, with 80% of colleagues feeling able to discuss flexible working when they need to. This indicates that CityCare’s continued emphasis on flexibility is making a real difference to how colleagues feel about managing their work and wellbeing.

However,  more colleagues report feeling worn out at the end of the working day or lacking energy outside of work, with only 45% of our colleagues, feeling able to meet the conflicting demands of their role.

Our results come at a time when CityCare has developed organisational, departmental and team‑level  survey action plans, introduced in 2025 to support improvement over the next one to two years. This means we are not starting from scratch, and work is already underway. We recognised however, that meaningful change takes time.

Leadership teams will now review the results in detail, including discussions at Leadership Council. Departments and teams will also receive their localised results to support further conversations with colleagues.

Thank you again to everyone who shared their views. Your honesty helps shape the actions we take and strengthens our focus on creating a supportive and sustainable working environment. CityCare remains proud of the compassion, professionalism and resilience shown by colleagues every day, and we are committed to supporting you in delivering the best care possible.
