Judith Douglas, Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and Quality writes about her visit to see the Infection Prevention Control (IPC) staff to engage with teams, review best practices, and see firsthand CityCare’s commitment to high-quality patient care and collaboration.

On 23 April 2025, I had the opportunity to take part in a visit at Wollaton View, alongside Fiona Branton, our IPC Lead. The team is made up of community-based specialist nurses who provide advice regarding the prevention and management of healthcare-associated infections.

The focus of this visit was to review an ongoing outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting, assess the situation, and ensure infection prevention and control (IPC) practices were being followed to the highest standard.

A Thorough Assessment

During our visit, we spoke with both staff and residents, gaining insight into their symptoms and ongoing recovery. Every resident room complied with IPC principles for safe isolation in a care home, with staff following strict protocols: bare below the elbows, wearing aprons and gloves and fluid repellent surgical face masks if individuals were vomiting. We also checked that all patients were monitored via bowel charts and fluid balance charts. Samples had been taken, and a clear plan was in place to end isolation once patients recovered and were no longer at risk.

Balancing Safety & Patient Wellbeing

Isolation can be challenging; residents are confined to their rooms behind closed doors, and understandably, some visitors chose to stay away, worried about contracting the infection. Despite this, those who did visit adhered carefully to IPC protocols, ensuring safety for themselves and their loved ones.

Our dedicated staff remained compassionate, fully aware of the emotional and physical impact of isolation on residents. Their understanding and commitment to maintaining IPC standards were truly commendable.

Reflections on the Visit

One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience was listening to patients and witnessing the kind, dedicated care delivered by our team. I spoke with a resident who shared her journey, expressing appreciation for the personalised support she received while managing both her condition and the restrictions placed on her care.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Wollaton View and to Fiona for the opportunity to see their vital work up close. It’s inspiring to witness the dedication of our healthcare professionals and the thoughtful care they provide every day.
