While some positions may require specific skills or experience, many volunteer opportunities are open to individuals without prior experience. Key qualities such as empathy, reliability, and a willingness to learn are often prioritized.
Is there an age restriction?
Volunteers have to be at least 16 years of age. There is no upper age limit as long as you can fulfil your role safely.
Will I need a background check?
A Disclosure & Barring check will be carried out through the organisation’s Human Resources Department at no cost to the volunteer.
Will volunteering impact my benefits?
Volunteering is generally not expected to affect your benefits, but it’s wise to confirm with the appropriate authorities for your specific situation.
Will travel expenses be reimbursed?
Volunteers must not be out of pocket because of their volunteering and Nottingham CityCare will reimburse proportionate and relevant expenses incurred, agreed in advance with the volunteer. All expenses paid to volunteers must be supported by receipts and recorded on a Volunteer Expenses Form countersigned by a manager.
Will training be provided?
Training opportunities will be provided based on the volunteer role, and this will be provided through eLearning and face to face training. Before starting as a volunteer, you will need to have completed your induction and core learning.
What is the expected time commitment for volunteering?
The time commitment varies based on the role and service, so it’s best to discuss this with the specific service you are interested in.
Do I need references?
You are required to supply full details of one person who knows you well (i.e. have known you over 2 years) and can supply a reference but have consented to act as referees on your behalf.
Can I select my preferred volunteering location?
You may have the chance to express your preferences for areas or departments within CityCare, but it's advisable to discuss your interests with the volunteer coordinator.
What advantages does volunteering offer?
Volunteering can help you develop valuable skills, boost your confidence, and provide a sense of purpose and connection to the community.
How can volunteering enhance my career?
Volunteering at CityCare can be an excellent way to gain experience and strengthen your resume for future job opportunities in the field.
Will I be able to obtain a reference?
If you fulfil the agreed-upon duration and meet the necessary criteria, the main Voluntary Services Department will provide you with a basic reference.
What should I wear when volunteering?
You will receive a volunteer uniform which will be a coloured polo shirt according to individual preference. The polo shirt will have the Nottingham CityCare logo and volunteer marked on it, so it is easily identifiable when worn in the organisation.
