Nottingham CityCare has officially launched the Nottingham CityCare Community Charity, a new independent charity created to support the health and wellbeing of local people by funding projects and initiatives that sit outside core NHS commissioning but can make a real and lasting difference.

The charity builds on the compassion, commitment and creativity shown every day by CityCare teams supporting people across Nottingham. It will focus on funding education, practical advice, facilities, equipment and support services – often the small but vital extras that help people live healthier, more independent lives.

The charity’s ambition is clear:

“To preserve and protect the health of our patient community by providing grants that support education, practical advice, facilities, services and equipment not normally available through statutory provision.”

Since gaining Charity Commission approval last year, an independent Board of Trustees – made up of external members alongside current and former CityCare staff – has been working behind the scenes to establish strong governance, banking and operating arrangements. CityCare’s corporate services, including communications, recruitment and finance, will support the charity to grow sustainably.

Leading by example

To mark the charity becoming operational, CityCare Chief Executive Dr Nicole Atkinson will personally lead its first major fundraising activity by taking on the ThamesRing250, a 250‑mile ultramarathon later this year.

Speaking about the launch, Dr Nicole Atkinson said:

“Every day I see where small, practical support can make a huge difference to people’s lives. The CityCare Community Charity gives us a new way to respond to local needs and strengthen the support we already provide across Nottingham. To kickstart the fundraising for our new charity, I’m taking on the ThamesRing250 - a gruelling 250 mile ultramarathon which will push me well outside my comfort zone, but I can’t think of a better motivation than raising funds to support our patients and communities.”

All funds raised will go directly to supporting the charity’s work in local communities.

Getting involved

Now that the charity is live, CityCare is inviting community partners, supporters and fundraisers to get involved. Over the coming months, the charity will:

  • Raise awareness of its purpose and ambitions

  • Invite ideas for fundraising and community‑led initiatives

  • Welcome grant applications for local projects that demonstrate meaningful impact

The charity is also seeking volunteers and fundraisers who would like to support events, generate ideas or act as champions within their communities.
