By Dr Nicole Atkinson, Chief Executive
In my first month as Chief Executive, I had the privilege of visiting Nottingham CityCare’s Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), a cornerstone of our city’s urgent and emergency care system.
Led by Jim Quinn, Head of the UTC, I was given a full tour of the facility and introduced to the incredible team delivering care on the ground. From clinical practitioners to radiographers, receptionists to security staff, every person I met was focused on one thing: providing safe, responsive, and compassionate care to our community.
As a Nottinghamshire GP, I’m no stranger to the pressures of primary care. But seeing the UTC in action gave me a new appreciation for the complexity and coordination involved. The team works seamlessly with GPs, hospitals, pharmacies, and A&E to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
What really stood out were the innovations in action. I was fascinated by the ECG machine that transmits vocal readings via phone to a cardiologist, converting soundwaves into images for instant interpretation. I also saw the clever use of cardboard splints for minor fractures—an eco-friendly, effective solution until patients can reach a fracture clinic. And with two X-ray machines on site, the UTC is well-equipped to handle a wide range of urgent needs.
One of the most exciting developments is the new appointment system trial. It’s already making a difference—reducing waiting room congestion and giving patients more control over their experience. Feedback from both staff and patients has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s a great example of how small changes can have a big impact.
A heartfelt thank you to Jim, Kam, Suneeta, Tiffany, Jess, and all the reception and security staff who took time out of their busy shifts to speak with me. Your dedication is inspiring.
I’ll be returning to the UTC next month with Dr Kathy McLean, Joint Chair of the Integrated Care Board for Nottingham/Nottinghamshire and Derby/Derbyshire, who is eager to see firsthand the vital role the UTC plays in our local health and social care system.
