Marjorie Palmer’s journey is one of determination, resilience, and trust, a shining example of how compassionate care and expert treatment can truly transform a life.

Referred to our Leg Ulcer Clinic in May 2024 for a large ulcer on her right lower leg, Marjorie first met our team in June. From the very beginning, her treatment plan was focused on easing both the physical discomfort and the emotional strain her condition was inflicting. Her leg ulcer was not just a wound; it caused chronic pain, anxiety, and even social worries, as she was deeply concerned about the odour and the frequent, often distressing dressing changes.

During her initial assessment, our team quickly set Marjorie on a treatment pathway that involved compression bandaging. Recognising the seriousness of her condition, she was referred to the Vascular team at QMC to ensure a thorough evaluation of her circulation. This early phase of treatment was more than just about healing the wound, it was about building Marjorie’s confidence to face her fears. Despite feeling anxious and in pain, she committed to attending weekly clinic appointments over several months. During this time, when leakage became an additional challenge, the District Nursing service provided extra support on weekends for about three to four months, ensuring she was well looked after.

Marjorie’s journey was not without its challenges. In October 2024, she developed a new wound on her other leg, which meant both legs now needed urgent, continuous treatment using compression therapy. The Vascular team reviewed her case and scheduled her for further specialised treatment in the new year. In the meantime, to prevent further deterioration and avoid infection, Marjorie continued her rigorous compression treatment.

Gradually, as her condition improved, the frequency of her clinic visits was reduced to once a week and, by mid-March 2025, her unwavering commitment to her treatment paid off. She was discharged as healed and shifted to maintenance compression garments to reduce the risk of future skin breakdown.

Reflecting on this challenging yet ultimately uplifting journey, Dina Walster, Leg Ulcer Clinic Assistant Lead and Tissue Viability Nurse, commented: “Our team’s hard work and the spirit of genuine compassion we bring to every patient’s care were vital in Marjorie’s journey. It’s not just about healing a wound; it’s about providing emotional support during the most trying times. Marjorie’s trust in us, despite her anxieties and discomfort, truly highlights the difference that dedicated nursing care can make.”

Marjorie’s success story goes beyond the clinical procedures: it demonstrates the transformative role our Leg Ulcer Team plays in improving lives.
