Black History Month is underway, with people and organisations sharing important stories of black history and the figures who made a difference to the lives we live today.

Our first inspirational person has been selected by Donna Sherratt, SSBC Head of Programmes. Donna has chosen Baroness Floella Benjamin (DBE), a Trinidadian-British actress, author, businesswoman, politician, presenter, and singer who over the last forty-seven years has had a diverse and impactful career.

She has written over 30 books, received an OBE for her achievements in broadcasting and she also campaigned vigorously for diversity in children’s books and in the media.

In 2010, Floella was further recognised for her achievements and leadership, becoming Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham and became a member of the House of Lords. She uses this platform to speak on issues concerning children, women, diversity, media and the arts. She is particularly concerned with the plight of children, their human rights, education and welfare throughout the world.

Donna has shared why she is inspired by Baroness Benjamin here.
